Oil on canvas "Christ Crucified", Following Velázquez's Model, XIX Century
Oil on canvas from the early 19th century, following the model of the Crucified Christ created by Diego de Velázquez in the early 1630s.
Velázquez created his work shortly after returning from his trip to Italy, where he had the opportunity to study the anatomy of the nude human body at the hands of the best Italian artists of the time. There he created works such as Vulcan's Forge which, besides being one of his masterpieces, was a project of perfection of anatomy.
This is precisely the most outstanding feature of the work, the anatomical perfection. The masterful nude is the absolute protagonist of the painting, an Apollonian Christ whose pallor seems directly inspired by the work of Guido Reni.
It is a frontal nude, in contrapposto, with which one leg arches slightly and the hip rises with great naturalness. The purity cloth is very reduced, without waste of flights, in order to avoid distractions in the viewer's gaze towards the naked body.
The work gives off a divine beauty, with a dramatic content. Despite the fact that Christ is already dead, as shown by the presence of the wound in his side, he is not recreated in the blood nor does he present a face that shows pain or suffering, but appears represented with a serene gesture, full of dignity and nobility. His face appears half-hidden, by the crestfallen gesture and the hair that falls over his shoulders. The head presents a luminous halo that seems to emerge from the figure itself, illuminated against the dark background, which provides an atmosphere of divinity.
Following the iconographic formula of his father-in-law and master, Francisco Pacheco, supported by various historical arguments, Christ is nailed to the cross with four nails instead of three. This representation was also an iconographic innovation because it is presented resting his feet on a small wooden base.
