A magnificent cognac orange pouf designed by Luigi Massoni for Poltrona Frau, this pouf is part of the iconic "Dilly Dally" series released during the 1970s.
with a short cylindrical shape and soft lines, the piece combines functionality, mobility, and sophistication, with a uniform structure upholstered in cognac orange leather, a material for which Poltrona Frau is known. The top is crowned by a soft, removable cushion, whose central button-tufted finish provides a delicate visual and textural interplay.
An ingenious design detail is the side indentations, which facilitate the removal of the cushion and turn the pouf into a dual-use piece, either as a seat or as a small storage unit. The base incorporates four steel casters, allowing for fluid movement without compromising the overall aesthetic. This fusion of fine materials such as leather and steel, along with its modular design and playful spirit, make it an emblematic piece of Italian design in the 1970s, a period in which functionality and sculpturality were sought.
Luigi Massoni: The Italian industrial designer and architect
Luigi Massoni was a key figure in the evolution of post-war Italian industrial design. Trained as an architect at the Milan Polytechnic School, his professional career was closely linked to the development of a modern, functional, and refined aesthetic that characterized mid-20th-century Italian design. Beginning in the 1950s, he worked as a consultant and designer for iconic brands such as Cappellini, Guzzini, Poltrona Frau, and Fratelli Guzzini, leaving a lasting mark on the design of domestic and industrial products. He was one of the pioneers in introducing the concept of integrated design, participating not only in the object itself but also in the corporate image, packaging, and visual communication of the brands he worked for.
Massoni was noted for fusing traditional materials, such as wood and leather, with modern technologies such as plastics and metals, creating objects that combined elegance, utility, and a strong symbolic charge. His approach was both technical and poetic: he knew how to imbue the simplest objects with a powerful visual impact and an ergonomic design that served the user. In the case of Poltrona Frau, his collaboration was fundamental in modernizing the brand's image, providing products such as the "Dilly Dally" vanity set, which reflect his concern for versatility, mobility, and everyday beauty. His legacy lives on in many pieces still in production and in permanent industrial design collections.
