After having spent several years training and practicing as an architect, Rui studied product design at ESAD in Matosinhos and Porto. In 2007, he challenged the owner of the design company he worked for to start a furniture business, the challenge was accepted and thus Piurra was born.
Rui's grandfather was a highly skilled carpenter and used to make wooden toys for his grandchildren, one of these toys was called a 'piurra' (or spinningtop). Rui was so inspired by the way his grandfather could transform wood into beautiful objects with his hands and that he named the design company after the piurra. Rui's father was also a trained carpenter who passed down the skills his father taught him, keeping the secrets of traditional Portuguese woodwork and craftsmanship alive within the family. Piurra's furniture is produced using traditional woodworking methods, each piece is hand crafted to order in Portugal.
